Introduction to The Soundsory® Program

Soundsory® trains better brains and bodies by targeting our motor and cognitive abilities through a multi-sensory movement and music program and addresses emotional regulation too. To achieve this, the program involves the use of rhythmic music that is played on a patented headset usually worn whilst doing some fun activities. They can also be worn during or after general movement exercises. This program was designed by Tomatis® Method experts for children as well as adults who aim to sharpen their minds and bodies.

Soundsory® activates countless brain connections by simulating the ear’s hearing and balance systems. This way, the ear and brain are retrained in order to process sensory information more quickly and accurately leading to better balance, coordination and motor skills and emotional regulation due to the connection of the vagus nerve to the ear..

Who is it for & how can it help you?

The Soundsory® Program can work for anyone including children and adults irrespective of their skill levels.

The program can easily adapt to your specific needs and can be used at home as well. It works effectively along with other therapies or even when used individually. Furthermore, the program can help with conditions such as sensory and auditory processing disorders, autism spectrum and motor skill delays.

How does it work?

The Soundsory® program is based on two unique parts that stimulate the brain simultaneously – rhythmic music and movement exercises. Let’s understand them one by one.

Rhythmic music and movement exercises

Rhythmic music

While listening to rhythmic music, it’s difficult to control yourself from moving to the beat. Soundsory® leverages this universal power of music with a personalised playlist of enhanced rhythmic songs. All you’ve got to do, is turn the headphones on, tap on the play button & listen to the tracks including:

  • Playful nursery rhymes and marching songs
  • Selected classics from Bach, Haydn, and Strauss
  • Vibrant Latin, gospel, and jazz tunes.

Not only this, but when you start listening, a patented dynamic filter will make the higher-pitched sounds crisper and softens lower pitches as well. Soundsory® stimulates hearing and balance systems through combined tempo changes from song to song. This further challenges the brain and helps form neural connections.

Movement Exercises

While rhythmic music stimulates the brain, simple movement exercises can improve posture, balance, and coordination. You can try four different movements per session such as marching and sideways jumps. The program can be easily adapted to suit the needs of each person and their specific targets:

  • Voluntary body movement
  • Timing & rhythm control
  • Balance & spatial judgement.

General instructions to practise the program

Practice Soundsory® for 30 minutes per day for a span of 40 days for best results. You will start with a first 20 day program, have a break of 2-3 weeks and continue for the next 20 days. The program comes with various exercises recommended by occupational therapists but note that these only need to be done to the best of your ability, what suits best according to your age and hence can vary from person to person.

Science Behind the Program

Rhythm used as a tool for neural connections

As we all know, music inspires movement in various ways such as dancing or tapping to the beats. Moving to the rhythm may seem easy but it draws on a lot of complex sensory functions. Once you’ve improved your rhythm, it directly impacts and strengthens all different kinds of movements such as posture, balance, coordination and even motor skills.

Soundsory® is specially designed to improve those skills using music along with movement. Basically, the program is based on the principles of neuroplasticity – our innate ability to form new neural connections.

Balance and hearing work together

Everyone mostly assumes that there are 5 main senses but that’s not completely true! Actually, there are 7 senses, but most are unaware of the other two: the proprioceptive system and the vestibular system. The vestibular (or balance system) is constant and unconsciously activated. Consider examples such as riding a bike, going upstairs or walking on uneven ground without stumbling, these are all situations where your balance system is at work.

Consider it as a control centre for balance which is located in the inner ear, that directly talks to the brain. This means that the ear does a lot more than just hearing; it also understands and manages our various movements. As our balance and hearing systems work hand-in-hand, listening to Soundsory® ‘s patented rhythmic music can highly influence our posture, balance and coordination for the better. It can also have a positive impact on our mood.

The vestibular system impacts six important functions:

  • Posture
  • Balance
  • Muscle tone
  • Spatial orientation
  • Eye movement
  • Alertness
  • Emotional regulation

After going through the research and technologies that led to the development of The Soundsory® Program, it is vital to understand how it can benefit people of any age or specific needs.

The Soundsory® Program: Major Benefits

  • Balance: The vestibular system controls balance and strengthens as we develop from crawling to running. Soundsory® teaches better stability, so we can move and stay balanced.
  • Postural control: Posture is the reason we can pick something up off the ground or reach out without falling over. Soundsory®’s sensory stimulation helps maintain the posture for smoother movement.
  • Vision: Our vestibular system keeps vision stable, so you can look from a book to the TV without getting dizzy or losing focus. Soundsory® supports a healthy, stable visual field.
  • Alertness: Soundsory® also increases attentiveness. Think back to the last physical activity you did. You probably felt more alert and focused. Soundsory® creates a similar effect.
  • Cognitive skills: By working on foundational sensory and motor skills, Soundsory® supports the development of essential reading, writing, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Emotional regulation:  The vagus nerve is connected to the ear and the limbic system and stimulates or inhibits all organs like lungs, heart, digestive organs, therefore it directly affects the person’s emotional regulation. The Soundsory® program will thus be helpful in regulating emotions and decrease frustration and anxiety.

  • Hi

I have a question about the use of headphones. Can it be used without headphones?

I have a son who is 3-year-old. I don’t thonk I will be able to keep the headphones on him for a long time. Can it be use via speaker or something?

After 40 lessons, can I just replay this?

    Thank you for your time.

    Kind Regards,

    Irina.
