To Keep Calm During Quarantine, Know Your Essential Services!

Remember, some of the biggest challenges generated by COVID-19 aren’t the direct result of the virus itself but come from the psychological impact on the lives of everyone affected by the pandemic.

After all, a lot of your family’s important needs may be disrupted, and the anxiety generated by such a situation can lead to emotional regulation problems.

On the bright side, however, there is always a way to counteract all this fear and stress: Information.

Of course, it is still important to acknowledge that we are in a grave situation and there are serious risks to public health. Adjustments and sacrifices still have to be made. But by knowing the essential services your family still has access to, you can avoid the panic trap and focus on getting those necessities for the sake of your physical and mental health.

1. Pharmacies

Needless to say, pharmacies are still open and the government has asked everyone to contact them for their usual medication. And if you have been shopping for medication online, you can continue to do so during this period.

That said, it has been highly advised that families get theirs ahead of time. Simply contact your current pharmacy and ask how they plan to make deliveries.

Also, if you happen to have very vulnerable members (such as special needs children) and need medication for their condition, make a point to consult their doctors, pediatricians and psychiatrists about any changes to prescription and what to do in the event of a shortage.

2. Healthcare

While the current crisis is definitely testing the limits of healthcare systems, many professionals across all fields are doing their best to provide support. That includes those who are working in the field of mental health as well.

Of course, new restrictions may still apply. Clinic visits may be either disallowed or heavily reduced. However, the most important thing to remember is that many psychologists and psychiatrists will still be there for your family in one form or another. (In fact, we here at Tomatis® will continue to provide support for our own clients during this period.)

3. Grocers

Lastly, you should know that grocers around the world are already implementing a wide number of ways to continue providing necessities to everyone staying at home. In Western Australia, the government has even collaborated with Coles and Woolworths stores to grant higher priority to pensioners, the elderly and persons of disability.

Alternatively, much like pharmacies, you can also shop for your groceries online and reduce risks. Make a point to stock up on essentials as much as you can, but also take note of any restrictions and understand that other families need supplies too.

Now, there are probably still a number of other concerns you are struggling with outside of the ones that can be addressed by the three services above. On the bright side, it still helps to know that the most vital needs of your family can still be taken care of if you just know where to go. That’s one less big thing to be anxious about!

If anything else, it gives you more room to think about how to connect more with your children in a fun way. Get the board games out of the closet, look for new indoor exercises to enjoy or simply take more time to talk about how things have been. These activities may seem light, but one shouldn’t underestimate their positive impact on your body and mind. You will need as much of it as you can during this crisis. (And remember: You’re not facing this alone!)
